So we come to the end of a long and frustrating week, one of those where you’re so worn out you can’t even muster the strength to beat your head against the wall, but then again if you did, at least you’d have the dent to show as the one thing you’d accomplished in the last five days.
At times like this, it’s good to reflect on the positive things that happened during the week, such as:
-- On the spur of the moment I called one of the people I love most in the whole world, aka my dad, and he came and took me to lunch and cheered me up.
-- One day I got a truly wonderful and interesting e-mail from a weblog reader I’ve never met, who lives in another country, no less, and it completely made my day.
-- In a separate e-mail, one of my oldest and dearest friends advised he will be in Springfield tomorrow -- and I had already planned to go there to pick up my long-awaited amp (one step closer to a working stereo – huzzah).
-- I have overcome my shame of writing words like “huzzah.”
-- A guy I used to work with back in the day wrote the cover story of the most recent Newsweek. I just think that's cool. I remember listening to the Replacements with him and him trying to teach me how to juggle. I remember thinking, "He has so much ambition and I'm just old."
-- I sat and talked about books with another one of my most simpatico friends and realized how much I miss seeing her.
-- DMJ called.
-- Someone I work with said, “I just have to share this with you – because I know you’ll appreciate it.” It wasn’t gossip, it was something cool about themselves they wanted to entrust me with. I love a moment like that.
-- I looked through one of the architecture books I got from Dan and thought about him.
-- I took the Audi to a new repair place (don’t ask) and they did absolutely fantastic work on it. They were thorough and friendly and I wanted to give all of them a hug -- and I’m not really a hugger.
-- The stock of [the place where I work] topped $100/share. Kind of makes it all worthwhile.
-- A friend and I were having dinner at an outdoor restaurant tonight, loving this 68-degree weather, when the couple at the next table offered us the rest of their bottle of wine. We had a nice conversation with them, then walked home. My friend said to me, “You have some kind of knack of getting complete strangers to talk to you. I’ve never seen anything like it. We’re sitting there, minding our own business, and then we get free wine.”
Told ya.
You can’t really deem the week a total loss when it culminates in good conversation and free wine.
