Why I was crying tonight at 12th & Porter: [Well, not crying, really, but I did have tears in my eyes.]
(1) Will Kimbrough sang "Closer to the Ground," a song I love, love, LOVE.
(2) Tommy Womack explained why he was involved with the show and how much he loves the show's host, his former manager, who took ill a few years ago. It was a very emotional moment, and he said he prays for her healing. Then he said, "Music for healing. Music for healing. Music for healing." Yes, he is a preacher's kid.
The event was the Sweet Relief benefit, which raises money for musicians' health care costs. It was $20 at the door, and some barflies who overheard the cost said, "Who's playing? Sting?"
I still can't get over that many people in this town will not play to see live music -- and they certainly wouldn't pay $20. Man, I would have paid $20 just to hear "Closer to the Ground."
